The landscape terms “hardscape” and “softscape” simply refer to the elements or materials being used in a landscape design. The hardscape are the non-living elements of a landscape design.
The hardscape elements help define form, shape, space and order in the landscape. A well-designed, strategically located hardscape feature, can play an important role in defining lifestyle, an outdoor space, adding curb appeal, helping bridge or transition from one space to another and ultimately expanding your living area. Elements such as patios, driveways, pool decks, sidewalks, boardwalks, arbors, pergolas, gates and fences, etc. etc. help define space and a portion.
Hardscape elements can be natural, providing an organic feel to the landscape or can be man-made creating a more contrived modern touch to the outdoor environment. Natural or composite wood combined with natural stone continues to be a popular theme in landscape design.
